Palo Verde Raises $1,200 to Help Nepal!
Our caring community generously donated to the schoolwide spare change drive, macrame bracelets project led by Mrs. Watson’s 4th grade class, and even a lemonade sale to raise funds to help the earthquake victims in Nepal. $1,200 has been donated to UNICEF to support their humanitarian response in Nepal. Thank you, Palo Verde!

PAUSD Board Policy Review Committee (BPRC) Accepting Applications for Parent Representative for the 2015-2016 School Year
The Board Policy Review Committee (BPRC) has been established as a Board of Education committee to assist the Board in its thinking about District policies. The scope of the work involves policies in operations, new mandates and policies derived from State of California legislation, and policy needs for Palo Alto Unified School District.
Application forms can be obtained from the Superintendent’s assistant, Kathleen Ruegsegger, at kruegsegger@pausd.org. You can obtain information by phone by calling 650-329-3737. Classroom Volunteers Needed in September – An Hour a Week Could Change a Student’s Life

Assist teachers in the classroom with individualized instruction much like you may have done in your own child’s school. Relay for Life Palo Alto

This is an organized community fundraising walk to raise awareness and money for cancer research–all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. During Relay. each team pledges to keep one member on the track, walking or running laps, for the entire 7 hours. This event is very family friendly.

Palo Verde students have organized a spare change drive to help more than 1,500,000 children and their families who have been affected by the earthquake in Nepal. Funds will be donated to UNICEF to support the emergency humanitarian response in Nepal. Contributions can be turned in to the collection jar in the Palo Verde main office. Thank you for your support!

Classroom Volunteers Needed in September – An Hour a Week Could Change a Student’s Life

In Palo Verde tradition, our 5th Graders raise funds for a Class Gift. The Class Gift is a way to give back a lasting contribution to the school. The 5th Graders, with parent supervision, brainstorm ideas and take a vote to decide the winning idea. Last year, the 5th Graders selected the awesome and well-used backstop in our field. The 5th Grade Class of 2015 has chosen to gift new furniture for the teachers’ lounge to be enjoyed by the teachers and staff for many years to come.

Palo Verde Spare Change Drive to Help Nepal!
Palo Verde students have organized a spare change drive to help more than 1,500,000 children and their families who have been affected by the earthquake in Nepal. Funds will be donated to UNICEF to support the emergency humanitarian response in Nepal. Contributions can be turned in to the collection jar in the Palo Verde main office. Thank you for your support!

Nepal Earthquake Funds raised by Nysa and Pariya Our Palo Verde girls Nysa Bhat, 5th grade and Pariya Sarin, 4th grade had set up a lemonade stand on May 3rd, Saturday to raise funds for Nepal Earthquake victims. The girls did a wonderful job and raised $210! Parents of the girls had promised to match the funds raised three times which takes the total to $840. Both the girls and their families are extremely thankful to the Palo Alto community for coming out in big numbers and donating generously to support the noble cause. We are currently looking at options (organization/person) where the raised funds can be put to good use.

Palo Verde Spare Change Drive to Help Nepal! Palo Verde students have organized a spare change drive to help more than 1,500,000 children and their families who have been affected by the earthquake in Nepal. Funds will be donated to UNICEF to support the emergency humanitarian response in Nepal. Contributions can be turned in to the collection jar in the Palo Verde main office. Nepal Earthquake Funds raised by Nysa and Pariya Our Palo Verde girls Nysa Bhat, 5th grade and Pariya Sarin, 4th grade had set up a lemonade stand on May 3rd, Saturday to raise funds for Nepal Earthquake victims. The girls did a wonderful job and raised $210! Parents of the girls had promised to match the funds raised three times which takes the total to $840. Both the girls and their families are extremely thankful to the Palo Alto community for coming out in big numbers and donating generously to support the noble cause. We are currently looking at options (organization/person) where the raised funds can be put to good use.

Sunday Afternoon Eichler Tour
Thinking about a remodel? Or just curious to see what others have done with their Eichler homes? There are still spots open for a walking tour on Sunday, May 3rd, through five recently remodeled Eichler homes of Palo Verde families. From 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., you can walk at your leisure from home to home, hear remodel stories from the owners, learn tips and tricks for what works and what doesn’t and maybe meet a contractor or two. Staff Appreciation week is April 27- May 1! During this week, the staff will enjoy a traditional luncheon hosted by the Kinder Families (Thurs. April 30th) and the PTA will support a few venues (Door Décor by the students, Snack Attack and flower day).
In past years, we have offered that a flower from your garden or a simple statement, picture or note of what your child enjoys or has learned from a staff member often brings smiles and true recognition to our entire staff during this week: current or past teacher(s), classroom aides, resource team, librarian, office staff, custodians, Music, Art and PE! You are welcome to celebrate staff as you see fit for your family.
You might ask your child who they would like to thank!
For those who would like to purchase a small token, we recommend the “Staff Favorites Binder” located in the Main Office. Classroom wish list items are listed as well. Importantly, the PTA wants you to know there is no obligation to do anything as your ongoing support throughout the year is greatly appreciated.

ONLY 6 DAYS TO GO: VOTE NOW TO RENEW $13M IN SCHOOL FUNDING!
VOTE NOW to renew some 7% of our annual school budget in parcel tax funds that expire next year. Measure A needs two YES votes for every NO vote to pass. Update: As of the Tuesday, 9,979 ballots have now been received, or 48% of the total votes we expect to be cast in this election. 33% of the ballots are from a probable PAUSD parent households. Based on phone banking results and past voting demographics, 67% of our YES supporters still haven’t voted, and similarly 67% of likely parents haven’t voted. That’s a ton of YES votes waiting to be returned. We NEED to get the identified supporters to vote and return their ballots or this Measure could fail.
Please sign up to phone bank on Addison’s next phone banking date, April 27 between 6pm and 8:30pm at Keller-Williams on the corner of Hamilton and Cowper. If you can’t make it then, make up that date on any Monday to Thursday. http://www.SupportPaloAltoSchools.org/calendar until May 4. Vote YES on Measure A
Mail in Ballots must be posted by April 30
PTA Council has proudly voted to support the parcel tax renewal, now called Measure A, including a $999 donation to the parcel tax campaign. PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the country. While we are strictly non-partisan, we can and do advocate for ballot measures. This Measure is extremely important to pass to keep the 80 teachers, counselors, librarians and psychologists for which the current parcel tax pays as well as support the increasing student enrollment (+1100 student since 2008/9, projected increase of +700 in the next 5 years) . The modest increase in the parcel tax will enable a small expansion of funding to support struggling students, STEAM programs and student wellness. Even with the increase in property taxes we have enjoyed in the last year, our school district funds do not keep up with inflation. We have lost approximately $4 million of income annually from the Cubberley lease as well as having to fund our employee pension plan that the state has pushed onto school districts. Because we are a basic aid district we will not get more money from the state’s Local Control Funding Formula. This week we are celebrating Walk and Roll to school. Join hundreds of other families around Palo Alto and the country and walk/bike/scooter to school with your kids. Studies have shown that walking, biking, scooting to school is not only healthy but also makes kids alert and ready for school and builds community. Wednesday, April 22, during assembly, we will be picking the next winners of the very popular Golden Sneaker classroom trophy and will be recognizing kids who green commuted in March. We will also leave a flyer with a tear out form, outside classroom doors on Wednesday. Please remind your child to fill it out and drop it in the attached folder if he walked/biked/carpooled or took the PAUSD bus to school. Staff Appreciation week is April 27- May 1! During this week, the staff will enjoy a traditional luncheon hosted by the Kinder Families (Thurs. April 30th) and the PTA will support a few venues (Door Décor by the students, Snack Attack and flower day).
In past years, we have offered that a flower from your garden or a simple statement, picture or note of what your child enjoys or has learned from a staff member often brings smiles and true recognition to our entire staff during this week: current or past teacher(s), classroom aides, resource team, librarian, office staff, custodians, Music, Art and PE! You are welcome to celebrate staff as you see fit for your family.
You might ask your child who they would like to thank!
For those who would like to purchase a small token, we recommend the “Staff Favorites Binder” located in the Main Office. Classroom wish list items are listed as well. Importantly, the PTA wants you to know there is no obligation to do anything as your ongoing support throughout the year is greatly appreciated.

PVKC Help needed Dear PVKC Families, Kids’ Club needs your HELP finding a neighborhood women & dog. Last Friday, April 10th a PVKC Staff was attacked by a dog while watching the kids in the program. No children were harmed. The incident happened at 5:41pm outside on the grass / play structure area. The PVKC Staff was supervising the children and a woman was playing catch with her dog. The dog then turned and ran towards the PVKC Staff and attacked. After the attack the woman and dog fled the scene. We need your help identifying the women & dog.
The women appeared to be about 5’5″ height, thin built, short black wavy (maybe curly) hair that went up to her ears. She’s Caucasian and seemed to be in her late 40’s. Her dog was a black German Shepard (could have a little mix in it) with a few white strips on its head.
If anyone has any information on this woman and the dog please contact Danny Singh @ 650.852.9475. A name of either the woman or dog would help tremendously.

Vote YES on Measure A
Mail in Ballots must be posted by April 30
PTA Council has proudly voted to support the parcel tax renewal, now called Measure A, including a $999 donation to the parcel tax campaign. PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the country. While we are strictly non-partisan, we can and do advocate for ballot measures. This Measure is extremely important to pass to keep the 80 teachers, counselors, librarians and psychologists for which the current parcel tax pays as well as support the increasing student enrollment (+1100 student since 2008/9, projected increase of +700 in the next 5 years) . The modest increase in the parcel tax will enable a small expansion of funding to support struggling students, STEAM programs and student wellness. Even with the increase in property taxes we have enjoyed in the last year, our school district funds do not keep up with inflation. We have lost approximately $4 million of income annually from the Cubberley lease as well as having to fund our employee pension plan that the state has pushed onto school districts. Because we are a basic aid district we will not get more money from the state’s Local Control Funding Formula. Stressed Teens Online Certificate Course for Educators and Parents Tues April 28 to July 27 4-5:30pm
This new stressed teens online certificate course is for educators or parents who wish to learn about utilizing mindfulness and related practices with teens. This program was developed by Gina Biegel in 2004 and has been effective among adolescents in mental health, school and community settings. It has been proven to be efficacious and evidence-based for adolescents as demonstrated through research. Continuing the best-selling life stories told in The Circuit, Breaking Through, and Reaching Out, Jiménez chronicles his efforts and struggles as he continues his education at Columbia University. Francisco Jiménez emigrated from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, to California, where he worked for many years in the fields with his family. He received both his master’s degree and his Ph.D. from Columbia University and recently retired from Santa Clara University after over forty years, where he was most recently the chairman of the Modern Languages and Literature Department. Wheel Kids Bicycle Club, Inc. and the City of Palo Alto Safe Routes to School program are offering a class to teach bicycle safety skills to children between 11-14 years old, accompanied by a parent.The course begins with classroom-style discussion, then moves to skills practice on a protected black top area, and finishes with a bike ride around the neighborhood, putting those newly learned skills to practice. The class is taught by a cycling instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists. Total time is approx. 4.5 hours.
