Our Spring Social & Silent Auction is in 3 days.  Have you purchased your tickets yet?  Have you invited your neighbors, family and friends?  If not, here’s how to get those tickets . .  
      Couple notes : Please consider vaulting your credit card information for easier check-in on the night of the auction.  If the purchaser doesn’t have children at PV, just enter “n/a” in the children and rooms fields.  This data is being collected for a ticket sales room competition where the classroom with the highest ticket sales get a pizza party.

2.  A ticket form is available in the Auction Catalog and in the office.  Complete the form and leave it in the basket opposite the staff mailboxes.
3.  Event night, at the door.

Attire is casual so grab those flip-flops and head on over to the new Mitchell Park Community Center for a fun evening of Palo Verde Pride!

THANK YOU for Supporting PiE!
On February 24th, PiE announced that it will be giving $5.3 million dollars to PAUSD for the 2015-16 school year!  And Palo Verde exceeded its goal of 215 families participating — WE ROCK!!  Last year, it meant an additional $174,000 for our school and we’ll let you know later in the spring what it means for next year.

Palo Verde Musicians and The Ives Quartet up close and personal

We are proud to announce that 5 of our Palo Verde 5th Grade Orchestra musicians have been invited to attend a Master Class by The Ives Quartet!  Vasuda Dokiparthi, Eric Fan, Alex Guan, Lauren Li, and Parker Wang will be performing while being coached in front of a live audience by the members of the Ives Quartet.

The Ives Quartet has attracted international acclaim from New York to San Francisco, Taiwan to London.  After 15 years as the resident Stanford String Quartet, they now perform on their own concert series in Palo Alto, Santa Cruz and San Francisco, as well as all around the world.

Congratulations to Alex, Eric, Lauren, Parker and Vasuda!  And if you can, stop by to see them perform on March 4 from 2:30-4:30pm at J.L. Stanford Middle School.

Don’t forget to check the Lost and Found Cart!

The Lost and Found Cart is filling up again!  Please take a few minutes to encourage your child to check the cart and reclaim your belongings.  You never know what you’ve forgotten about!  Lunch boxes, pumps, boomerangs, hairbands, water bottles, scout uniforms, baseball gloves, bats etc. have all been occupants of the cart at some point!

Labeling items helps me to return belongings.  A few minutes can save a LOT of $$$$.

Please remember, the cart is emptied and the goods donated or disposed of at the end of terms.  Next emptying date:  Apr 2nd.

Talent Show is coming soon! (May 11)

It’s time to start thinking about your Talent Show act!  Entry forms will come home just before Spring Break and Auditions will take place soon after.  Please remember that:

  • acts need to be 2 minutes or less,
  • acts must be inoffensive (please check music selections),
     
  • each participant can only take part in one act,
  • acts may be individual or in groups
  • acts must be rehearsed and “show-ready”

Serving on the PTA Board is a fun and rewarding way to make a difference in your child’s life, learn more about the inner workings of Palo Verde, and work with some of the many intelligent and capable people in the Palo Verde community. There is a role to fit every schedule. Many current and past board members have held full time jobs while serving.

The PTA Nominating Committee is actively seeking PTA Executive Board Members for the 2015-2016 school year. 

Open positions include President, VP of Fundraising, VP of Programs & Social Events, Secretary, and Auditor.

PTA Executive Board Office Descriptions 

Below are descriptions of all PTA Executive Board roles.  Consider joining the PTA Board! Board members meet monthly – generally on a Monday morning.

President:

* Orchestrate and lead the PTA officers and committees in an effective manner.
* Meet regularly with the school Principal on matters concerning the PTA.
* Prepare meeting agendas and conduct PTA association and board meetings.
* Prepare and present the PTA budget to the association membership.
* Represent Palo Verde at District PTA events.
* Attend and lead monthly PTA meetings.

VP of Communications:

* Help communicate Palo Verde PTA-sponsored social, educational & fundraising events & activities to the school-wide population. 
* Work closely with the publishing volunteers of The Voice & the PTA & Palo Verde website volunteers to communicate information on those events. 
* Perform the duties of the president in the case of their absence. 
* Attend monthly PTA meetings as a member of the Executive Board.

VP of Fundraising:

* Determine overall fundraising strategy and ensure that fundraising programs are run efficiently, cohesively and in a manner consistent with Palo Verde values.
* Support the chairs and volunteers of all fundraising activities.
* Help ensure that all fundraising activities are meeting the appropriate deadlines and timelines.
* Act as a liaison between the PTA Executive Board and the chairs of the Palo Verde fundraising events.
* Attend monthly PTA meetings as a member of the Executive Board.

VP of Programs and Social Events:

* Help ensure all school-wide social events and programs are meeting the appropriate deadlines and timelines.
* Act as a liaison between the PTA Executive Board and the chairs of the Palo Verde social activities and programs.
* Work with the school administration and the Palo Alto PTA to disseminate information about parent education opportunities happening throughout the district. 
* Attend monthly PTA meetings as a member of the Executive Board.

Secretary:

* Record minutes of all PTA association and Executive Board meetings (attendance, votes, expenditures, and major discussion items that might be necessary for future reference).
* Distribute copies of prior meeting minutes for review at board meetings. 
* Keep copies of minutes & treasurer’s report in a binder. 
* Find a back-up recording secretary when unable to attend meetings. 
* Act as Historian by maintaining records of PTA activities & logging volunteer hours.
* Attend monthly PTA meetings as a member of the Executive

Parliamentarian:

* Attend all executive board and PTA association meetings and advise on parliamentary procedure when requested.
* Initiate the formation of the nominating committee, recruit members as needed, and give instructions on procedure.
* Chair the by-laws committee and review by-laws annually.

Treasurer:

* Maintain accurate PTA financial books & records, including authorization of all receipts & disbursements.
* Maintain PTA bank accounts: Write checks to cover expenses, act as one of three authorized bank signatories on all deposits & disbursements of PTA funds, & keep paper records of all deposits & checks. 
* Deliver a treasurer’s report at PTA & executive board meetings. This record becomes part of the minutes. 
* Chair the budget committee & prepare the annual budget for adoption by the PTA association. 
* Attend monthly PTA meetings as a member of the Executive Board.

Auditor:

* Audit the books and financial records of the PTA association twice a year and upon resignation of the treasurer or any check signer.
* Prepare/present a written auditor’s report for the executive board and present the written auditor’s report for adoption by the PTA association.
* Attend monthly PTA meetings as a member of the Executive Board.

Rally to Save Buena Vista

The Palo Alto Council of PTA and the School Board have both passed resolutions in support of finding options that allow the Buena Vista students to continue to stay in our schools. The County of Santa Clara has set aside $8 million for the preservation of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park and Palo Alto City Manager, Jim Keene also directed city staff to set aside $8 million to preserve the park.  This rally is to thank the City Council for it action and also to encourage them to ratify funding at their earliest opportunity. Please join PTA and the PAUSD school community at the Mar 9 rally.  It is critically important for our community to come out in force to encourage City Council to support the preservation of the Buena Vista Mobile Home Park. PAUSD Art Education and Palo Alto Humane Society Partner to Inspire Animal Adoption   
PALO ALTO, CA – In an innovative new art project and exhibit, the Palo Alto Humane Society and the fourth and fifth graders at PAUSD’s Duveneck Elementary School have teamed up to create the “Adoptables” art show, March 4 – April 2.  The public is welcome to view the pastel portraits of shelter animals created by the Duveneck students at the Palo Alto Unified School District’s office located at 25 Churchill Avenue, Palo Alto.  The goal of the show is to promote adoption of rescue animals as pets.  “The power of art to communicate the spirit of the animals is remarkable, and the students were thrilled to think some animals might be rescued because of the exhibit,” shared PAUSD Art Coordinator Sharon Ferguson.    This exhibit is the first of its kind.  The students created these portraits during their Spectra Art classes, taught by Lynn Hamilton, which are an important part of the art education provided to all PAUSD students in elementary school.   A reception will be held at the PAUSD office on March 4, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. and is open to the public.  For more information on adopting an animal featured in “Adoptables” or other adorable rescue companions, please contact Palo Alto Humane Society at (650) 424-1901. Reading Tutors & Classroom Volunteers Needed Next School Year – Sign up Now

Need parents willing to volunteer beginning in September for K-4 classrooms in East Menlo Park and East Palo Alto.  Either tutor students in a structured reading program or assist teachers in the classroom.  These classes have no parents helping, no PTA, 62% of students are below grade level in reading and 53% below grade level in math – The volunteers make a difference for these kids. 3D Sculpting Event
Sun Mar 1, Mar 8, 1-3:30pm; MOAH
This a fun, hands-on class here at the Museum of American Heritage (MOAH.) Students will learn to create 3D objects with a special modeling program, which they will then use to create scenes and characters for computer games! This is a two-session class Further questions/thoughts go to  moah.org.
 
Local Control Accountability Plan Community Meeting

PAUSD is updating our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) as required by the California Department of Education.  All parents and community members are invited to participate in the LCAP Community meeting. At this meeting we will share progress on this year’s plan and solicit feedback on goals, actions and measurements as we began to develop the 2015/16 plan.  Info:  Local Control Accountability Plan Website.

The Palo Alto Arbor Day Festival

The Environmental Volunteers Junior Naturalist program

The EV Junior Naturalist launches its spring program series. For four consecutive Thursdays in March, students will get the chance to learn more about birds and marine creatures. Meet experts in the fields who can answer questions and explain what it means to be a scientist today. The Big Read 2015 Movie Screening

Fifth Annual Schools for Africa Youth Benefit Concert
