PiE Thanks Our Donors
Thank you to the many families who donated to PiE this year! With your help we earned the $175,000 January challenge grant and are closing in on our goal. Together, we are helping PAUSD schools be the best they can be for our kids; our collective generosity helps fund critical staff and programs that make a difference for PAUSD. Please stay tuned in February for the announcement of what we have been able to raise for PAUSD. Thank you again for your support!
E-waste drive results
We collected 1289 lbs of electronic waste earlier this month! Palo Verde will receive $64.45 from Green Citizen. Thank you to everyone who brought their obsolete electronics to the school; your efforts make a huge difference. Special thanks go out to Catherine Celio; Karen Wang; Risa Altaf; Banafsheh and Sofia Hussain; Diya Thukral; and Harini and Sundeep Shekhar for helping out with the drive.
New K-5 Report Card Being Developed
Staff and parent groups have been working since September to design a new report card aligned with the Common Core Standards. In addition, we have used this as an opportunity to consider changes in format and to make the language more parent-friendly.
The Common Core Standards address the content areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics; therefore the most significant changes will be seen in these areas. Palo Alto Unified School District is excited to transition to these standards and plans to fully implement these standards by the 2014-15 school year. Efforts have been made to streamline all content on the report card, to make the language more understandable to parents, and to identify performance labels that are more effective in helping describe student progress.
During the month of February, all elementary staff and parents are being asked to review a first draft of the revised report card. We will host a parent input meeting on Monday, February 24th at 8:20 in the multipurpose room.

Final Winter Family Movie Night – February 21
Have you come to Family Movie Night yet? You’ve got one last chance to join in the FREE fun. On Friday, February 21, we will have our last winter social movie night in the MP Room at 6:30. Remember to bring your floor blanket, pillows, and personal reusable cup or water bottle. The popcorn will be popping! The whole family is invited – younger and older siblings, grandparents. Palo Verde’s Night at the Oscars Auction Party is nearly here. The auction volunteers are putting together a fun event, filled with plenty of goodies to bid on as well as good food, music and friends.

Looking for an Easy Way to Support the Palo Verde PTA Auction?
Back for its third year in a row, the “Wall of Wine” at the PTA Auction is always a hit! And, an easy way for you to contribute to the fun. We’re looking for parents to donate bottles of wine that are worth at least $20. Donated bottles of wine get wrapped up. Participants pay $20 to choose a bottle of wine from the wall. It’s a surprise if the person gets a bottle worth $20 or even MORE! We’re looking for donations of champagne, sparkling, red, and white wines. Each donated bottle needs to be worth at least $20, but can be worth more. If you can contribute a bottle, please email email@example.com. We’ll send you details on how/where to drop your donation. I currently am unable to sufficiently help the students with book selections and library assignments because so many classes either do not have volunteers or the volunteers have been absent. Please help if you can. It need not be your child’s library time.

3) February is Palo Verde’s Love a Picture Book Month.
We ‘re trying to read 7,000 PICTURE BOOKS (Fairy Tales & Folktales count too.) as a school in an effort to educate the community about their value. They are for everyone!
4) The library is getting a new library system over Presidents’ Weekend. We are once again having a “friendly” contest with Duveneck in an effort to return all of our books before this transfer.
All library books will be due Feb. 11th. Checkout will resume as normal on Tuesday, Feb. 18th.
5) All Library Volunteers will need to be trained on the new library system. Two trainings are offered on Feb. 18 7:30-8:15am and 2:15-3. If you are not able to make these times, please make arrangements with Laura to be trained prior to your regular volunteer time. Thanks.

Has your child ever wanted to learn how to sew? Or knit, or weave? Let’sGo Crafting is a fiber arts school that is owned and operated by long time Palo Alto Parent, Connie Butner. This school specializes in teaching children 8 years old and up in sewing, knitting, and weaving. Morning sessions are from 9:00am to 12:00pm and focus on a specific fiber art skill each week.
