Double your PiE Donation
Did you know that without your donations to Palo Alto’s Partners in Education (PiE), Palo Verde wouldn’t have classroom aides, new science enrichment programs, Spectra Art, Project Resilience, or 80% of our reading specialist hours? From November 1-15 you can double your donation to PiE through a $225,000 matching grant. We ask $800 per student, or roughly $4.40 per school day, but please give whatever is meaningful to you and your family by visiting www.papie.org or by filling out a donation envelope at the Palo Verde school office.

What’s New on the Palo Verde Website: Parents Guide to Common Core, by grade
New Common Core State Standards will be implemented in California in the 2014-15 school year, along with Smarter Balanced Assessments. The new standards, called Common Core State Standards, set high expectations for all students. The aim of this state-led initiative is to develop standards that ensure all students are held to consistent expectations that will prepare them for college and career.
Find out what your child will be learning, at each grade level, in Mathematics and English Language Arts once the Common Core State Standards are in place. You’ll also learn more about how you can support your child’s learning and other helpful information.
October Mileage Tracker Forms Due on Friday Nov 1
Congratulations to our first three Golden Sneaker Award Winners – Rooms 12, 14 and 20. Thank you for your committment to walk, bike, carpool or scooter to school.
We are encouraging families to walk, bike, carpool or scooter to school atleast 5 days a month.
According to the Brookings Institute, if we all left our cars at home once a week and adopted alternate means of transport, it would lead to a 20% reduction in commuter traffic.
October mileage tracker forms are due on Friday, November 1. We have also made the form available online at https://pvpta.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/mileage_tracker.pdf
Please return the October form (and the September form, if you missed it) in the bin marked “mileage tracker/traffic safety” in the office. The Golden Sneaker Award raffle for October commuters will be held at the assembly on Wednesday, November 6.

PAUSD, City of Palo Alto Community eNews
On October 2 Governor Brown signed AB484, a law that provides PAUSD students and teachers an opportunity to experience the Smarter Balanced Assessments, which align with the Common Core State Standards. The field test of the new Smarter Balanced Assessments will be given online this spring to all students in grades 3-8 and 10 in English-Language Arts or Mathematics.
As a result of this law, PAUSD will not administer the California Standards Tests (CSTs) in English-Language Arts and Mathematics this spring 2014. This field test is designed to “test the test” and shore up our resources and infrastructure for full implementation in 2014-15. No student results in ELA or Math will be calculated or reported for spring 2014. API will be frozen at its current level until spring 2015.
In summary, this spring, PAUSD will administer the following assessments:
-Smarter Balanced field test for all students in grades 3-8, 11
-Smarter Balanced field test for a sample of ninth and tenth graders
-California Standards Test/California Modified Assessment in Science for grades 5, 8 & 10
-Early Assessment Program (EAP) Test for grade 11
-California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), grades 2-11 in ELA and mathematics
Other testing programs, such as CAHSEE, CELDT and PFT are not addressed in this piece of legislation, so these will continue as usual. In addition, our local district, school and classroom assessments will be used to gauge and monitor student progress. The PAUSD staff has been active in becoming knowledgeable about the new exams and how they correspond with our current curriculum. Also, PAUSD is closely monitoring any other specifics and possible changes to assessments in the state and we will keep you informed as we learn more information.
Questions and answers about AB 484 and changes to the assessment system are available at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/ab484qa.asp Questions and answers about the Smarter Balanced Field Test that will be administered in spring 2014 are available at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/smarterftqa.asp
