Welcome Back Picnic!
Please come join fellow Palo Verde families for a fun, casual get together this Friday evening, September 6th, 6-7:30pm. The PTA will provide dessert, drinks, and name tags for everyone. Pack up a picnic dinner for your family and dine with all of us “al fresco”. Parents have a chance to reconnect with old pals and make new friends at the school. Kids get to run around with each other after hours (and then sleep really well that night). See you there!

Help Us Reserve a Date for our Ice Skating Party
Many of our Palo Alto schools and organizations reserve the Winterlodge for ice skating parties, but available dates are limited. Do you enjoy sleeping outdoors or getting up early in the morning? PTA is looking for a volunteer(s) to help us reserve a date for our winter Ice Skating Party. Because of the high demand, we need volunteer(s) to stand in line and hold a spot either the night before and/or very early morning on Wednesday, September 18. Let’s Have a Ball This Fall – 3rd Annual Fall Party Book

It’s time to pull together the 3rd annual Fall Party Book. Help us continue this special tradition by donating a fun fall, winter, or holiday-themed gathering for kids, adults, or families.

The Fall Party Book offers a slate of fall and winter gatherings, focused on building our community through fun activities and parties while raising money to support the Palo Verde PTA. Parents host social, creative, or cultural gatherings sometime between mid-October and late February. Then, at the annual Harvest Fair, everyone in the Palo Verde community has the chance to purchase tickets to the events with proceeds going towards PTA programs.
Memorable events last year included the “Not So Newlywed” Dinner Party, Fun Run/Walk for Palo Verde Moms, Halloween Treats and Eats, Billiards Tournament, Pokemon Card Trading Party, “Let’s Play with Rice,” Spanish Tapas Party, White Elephant Gift Exchange, Swedish Glogg Party, Holiday Cookie Decorating, and so much more.

Seeking New Harvest Fair Leaders
Are you looking for a fun volunteer position at Palo Verde? Do you love the Harvest Fair? Do you have new ideas for making it even better?
Now’s the perfect time to get involved!
For the past 8 years, I’ve have a blast chairing the Harvest Fair Committee, but this year is my last one at Palo Verde, and I’d love to share what I know with someone before I head off to JLS next year. The Harvest Fair is one of the most popular social events at our school, a favorite of both kids and adults alike, but we need volunteers who are interested in working to make sure it continues after this year. The timing is flexible, plus I’ve got the planning down to a science, and you’ll be able to hit the ground running now to make next year even easier.
Amaze your friends! Inspire your kids! Enjoy the opportunity to meet many, many Palo Verde families! Experience the thrill of discovering what’s really hiding in the PTA closet!

eScrip for Palo Verde

With Safeway’s Back to Schools Program in Progress, Now Is a GREAT Time to Register for eScrip for Palo Verde!
As many of you know, through our relationship with eScrip, we can raise funds for Palo Verde just by shopping at Safeway and other merchants. We can raise even more through September 10th, when manufacturers of over 5,000 products sold in Safeway stores will contribute an additional 10% of sales to schools such as ours as part of Safeway’s Back to Schools program.
If you are not registered with eScrip or don’t have your Safeway Club Card registered, please do so soon! It’s easy and only takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Go to http://www.escrip.com and follow the instructions. Be sure to have your Safeway Club Card number and credit cards on hand when you register. Our group number is 137331259 and we are listed as Palo Verde PTA.
If you don’t remember your Safeway Club Card Number, call Safeway Customer Service at 1-877-723-3929 – they will happily help you identify your number.
If your Safeway Club Card is already registered with eScrip, great! Your contributions will automatically be sent to Palo Verde every time you enter your Safeway Club Card or associated phone number when you shop at Safeway.

Girl Scout Parent Information Night
Palo Verde MP room Tuesday, September 17 at 6.30pm
Find out how Girl Scouting helps girls grow strong by having fun, learing skills, performing service, and developing leadership.
Learn about Girl Scouting in our community, how troops are formed, and how your K-12 girl can participate.
Children are welcome to attend with their adult.

YARD DUTY: HAVE LUNCH WITH YOUR CHILD
Please consider volunteering during lunch at Palo Verde. Only sign up for once this school year if this is what you can do. If you can come once a month or once a week, it will be even better!
Research shows that youth whose parents are actively involved in their schooling are more engaged in school. Every parent, every day can positively affect kids’ lives.
The more adults are present during recess, the safer the playground will be. Children really enjoy seeing their parents, their friends’ parents, or a new caring adult with a smile on her/his face.

* Children play for the first half, and then eat at their designated tables. Bell will ring when it is time to sit down and eat.
* Go to the office and sign in/out using the volunteer sheet on the counter. Vest & walkie-talkies will be available in office.
* Once you sign up, we will email you a sheet with general guidelines. There will be a staff person in charge if you have questions onsite.

PTA Special Ed/Inclusion Representative
Did you know that 1,600 students in PAUSD receive Special Services? That is about 13% of the student population, which is almost 80 children at a typical 500 student Elementary school.
Being a PTA Special Ed/Inclusion Rep means representing kids with special learning needs and their parents on your campus. In this role, you can have a very positive impact at your school.
You help to create a sense of community among special ed parents at your school, in mainstream as well as SAI classes, including those who’s children are just being identified and
don’t yet have an IEP or 504. You can also help to raise awareness of learning differences in your school community, and promote an inclusive school culture.
It can take as little or as much time as you are able to give. You can expect to spend 26 hours a month in this role. It helps to share the role between two people.
Responsibilities:
• Host at least 2 social events a year (coffee or similar), for all parents of kids with IEPs, 504s, or learning differences
• Introduce yourself & your role to the school principal, the PTA president, chair of site council, any special ed teachers
• Be available to help connect parents with resources
• Help publicize Special Ed/Inclusion (CAC) events by posting flyers at your school

NEW: Introduction to Literacy class for Parents

literacy classes are available on Monday and Wednesday

The Palo Alto Adult School offers a free English literacy class for parents and adults that cannot read or write in their first language or English. After finishing this class, students will be able to participate in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class more effectively.
