Palo Verde Walk-a-Thon
Palo Verde’s 8th Annual Walk-a-thon is next Friday, September 14! You should have received a hot pink flyer in last week’s Friday folder with all the details about this fun event. Money raised from the Walk-a-thon will be used to help fund students’ lunchtime activities including Noon Art, Noon Games, and Walking Club. Students will walk around the field at Palo Verde as follows: 9:10-9:40am 4th and 5th graders; 9:45-10:10am 2nd and 3rd graders; and 10:35 to 10:55am Kinders and 1st graders. The Walk-a-thon asks for donations based on participation; there are no per-lap pledges. Please have your student ask only people he/she knows. All donations can be turned into the office or your child’s teacher any time. Everyone who participates in the Walk-a-thon will receive a nifty chain and two swell tokens. Please feel free to come walk with your child or email Lauren Aspegren at for more information.
Walk ON!
Save The Bay!
Palo Verde Elementary School September 2012 Community Service Project is on Saturday, September 22, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, 2012 The Faber Tract (East Palo Alto)
This is perfect for the whole family! No experience necessary. Let’s have as many families as possible come out to Save the Bay by helping to remove invasive species, clearing room for native wetland plants to grow at the Faber Tract in East Palo Alto. It is the goal of Save the Bay to re-establish 100,000 acres of Bay wetland to support a sustainable ecosystem for generations to come but they need help to restore the wetlands to their historic beauty. Volunteers will remove non-native plants and help with shoreline cleanup and by doing so will help to preserve our environment for wildlife habitat as well as human enjoyment.
Gloves, tools and instruction provided. Each event is led by Save The Bay staff certified in CPR and Wilderness First Aid and all site projects have been planned to ensure safety. Just bring your water, snacks and a picnic lunch if you desire and dress appropriately for the weather.
Due to the sensitive nature of the restoration site, space is limited and RSVP is requested. Please RSVP with number attending to
Jana Baxter, Community Service chair, by September 12.
Spirit Gear Orders
Show off your school spirit by wearing the Palo Verde logo!
The deadline for placing orders is September 28.
There are samples on display in the school office. It is highly recommended that you stop by and take a look at them if you are unsure about what size to order. There have been complaints in the past that the manufacturer’s sizes are on the small side, so, if in doubt, please order a bigger size.
If you have any questions please contact Ritu Das (rituparnad at yahoo dot com).

Team up with Friends and Donate an Event to the Fall Party Book
Some of the most popular items in the Palo Verde Spring Auction are spots in the unique social and creative gatherings donated and hosted by Palo Verde families. Memorable events include a Bollywood Dance Party, a Stomp Rocket Party, a Pokemon Trading Party, and Progressive Dinners donated by a group of Palo Verde families who live near each other.
Palo Verde students benefit from the PTA funds raised, people have fun, and our community grows stronger!
The Fall Party Book was created to promote these gatherings throughout the fall and winter months. Events last year included an Oktoberfest for adults, Halloween Treats and Eats, a White Elephant Party, Kids Bingo Bash, and more. Tickets are sold at the Harvest Fair in early October.

Can you team up with a friend to offer a Pumpkin Carving party, a Diwali Celebration, or a themed-progressive dinner? How about a series of gatherings focused on a winter-time hobby you can share such as orienteering, holiday baking, knitting, or jewelry making? Dream it up and make it happen!
To discuss donating a fall, winter, or holiday-themed gathering for kids, adults, or families, please contact Callie Turk or Rebecca Thompson or e-mail us at:
Make a Donation To Partners in Education (PiE)
Take advantage of PiE’s Challenge Grant! EVERY DOLLAR donated to PiE through September 7, 2012 will be matched up to a total of $300,000. PiE is the education foundation serving all of Palo Alto that funds essential staff and programs for PAUSD schools. PiE helps fill the gap left by state education funding cuts, and preserves critical staff and important programs at Palo Verde.
What PiE funds at Palo Verde:
– Classroom aides, so that every child has one more person to support his/her needs in the classroom. The aide not only assists students, but also enables the teacher to spend more time with small groups of students or with individuals
– Spectra Art, so that every child can enjoy art lessons and the creativity and confidence they build
– Project Resilience programs, building developmental assets and resilience for all students to bring into the classroom
– Additional reading specialist time, providing extra support in reading to those who most need it, enabling the classroom to tackle more advanced material and to progress in reading proficiency
Without PiE donations, we would not have these aides or these programs.

Help Your Child Track Green Commute Miles to School
In your child’s Friday folders last week was a form that will help them record and calculate the number of miles they walked/biked/carpooled to school in a month. For mileage information please turn the mileage tracker page over and use Palo Verde’s new walk and roll map. Even if your child is walking from across the street, have him/her enter 1/4 mile for each way. Carpooling kids will enter 1/4 mile for each way they carpool to school. This is a great way for kids to know how many miles they green commute to school. Our school goal is to record a total of 20,000 green commute miles for this academic year. At the end of each month some one from the traffic safety team will collect the forms from the kids. Please do not hand them over to the teachers.
If your family wants to join a biking or walking group or carpool to Palo Verde from your neighborhood please download this formand return it to the office by Sept 21.
