Palo Verde School and PTA News
Trial Run for new eNews Schedule
Since Palo Verde began publishing its Friday eNews, the volume of submissions has grown substantially. This is encouraging, because it means the Palo Verde community is embracing eNews as a cost-effective and efficient means of communication.
However, some of you have expressed to us that there is often so much information in each eNews that it can be time-consuming and difficult to sort through. To address this issue, we are testing a new format in which eNews will separated into two editions:
- A Friday eNews that will carry only Palo Verde School and Palo Verde PTA information
- A new Tuesday eNews that will carry PTA Council, PAUSD, Community and Palo Alto City information
We hope that these changes will make it easier for you to find the information you need. We also welcome your feedback….please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know what you think.

Lost and Found at Full Capacity
Lost and Found is overflowing! Please check for your missing items before Spring Break. The school will donate any unclaimed items when Spring Break ends.
School Site Council Vacancies for 2010 – 2012
The Palo Verde Site Council has two parent vacancies beginning in the 2010-2011 school year. The term of office is for 2 years.
The School Site Council is a decision making body that is composed equally of four parents and four staff members from Palo Verde School, plus the Principal. The purpose of the council is to work as an advisory group to the principal, in developing a comprehensive school plan and in approving a school improvement budget that is supportive of said plan. It meets once a month. The specific day and time for this year is to be determined, pending the election of new members.
The term of office for all members of the site council is two years, with the exception of the principal, who is a permanent member. Two of our parent members’ terms expired in June of 2010. Typically, elections take place in the spring.
If you would like more information about the Site Council, feel free to contact one of the current parent members: Linda Verhulp, Kristin Foss, Diane Jakubowski, and Joanna Schloss. You may also ask one of the following staff members on the site council: Sheri Cundall, Jocelyn Mason, Trebor Winslow, Carol Witt or Lupe Garcia.
If you would like to run for this office, please write a brief paragraph about yourself and why you would like to be on the Site Council. Give it to Lupe or Chris McGranahan in the Main Office by Friday, April 30, 2010. We will add your name and statement to the ballot. In addition, the ballot (with the candidates’ names and statements) will be sent out to the community via Enews and will also be posted on Main Office windows and school bulletin boards for the community to see and read. The election will be held at our School Open House on May 19, 2010.
Palo Verde Celebrates Earth Day – April 20 – 22: Three Days of Earth Day Celebrations!
Bike, Ride the Bus, Carpool to School: Palo Verde Elementary will celebrate Earth Day between 4/20 and 4/22 as part of a district-wide event designed to teach students and families about greenhouse gas emissions and to encourage more students and families to walk, bike, ride the bus, or carpool to school. Please join us in this effort.
Reuse, Recycle, Compost: You can also help the environment by packing the school snacks and lunches in reusable containers instead of Ziploc bags and using bottles or thermos for drinks instead of juice boxes. Don’t forget to recycle clean paper, plastic, aluminum foil, and compost your lunch leftovers, napkins, and milk cartons. Check the picture cards on blue and green cans for more information.
Drive Less Pledge: Our students can make a “Drive Less Pledge” to help reduce school commute related greenhouse gas emissions by using alternative transportation as often as possible. (Pledge cards will be provided in Friday folders on 4/9.) Students can decorate and post their “Drive Less Pledge” card on our Earth Day collage
New this year: Sign up online to track your family’s greener mileage between April 22 and May 5 and become eligible to win prizes at http://drivelesschallenge.com . See the creative ways other people reduce their car trips, and see how together we can make a difference for our planet.
You don’t have to wait until April 20 to help us celebrate Earth Day. You can start now by making greener and healthier choices. For information about safe, sustainable school commutes, visit www.saferoutes.paloaltopta.
